History, good cooking and strategic position among seaside, countryside and historical towns: Emilia-Romagna can show thousand and one faces all year round and, in the first days of the hot season, planning an excursion between Ravenna and Ferrara with exploratory base in Lugo can be an excellent idea. Located in the province of Ravenna, between Santerno valley and Senio valley, Lugo is a typical little town that keeps the tradition going and has some interesting architectural monuments. You can visit the beautiful Rocca Estense castle and the Pavaglione building commissioned from Earl Alfonso II d’Este, or you can experience the “Contesa Estense” during the second Sunday of May, when the town commemorates the Estense period with shows of flag flyers and musicians and challenges among the ancient districts of the town.

In Ravenna, close to the Riviera Romagnola, it’s impossible not to be fascinated by the sparkle of the Byzantine mosaics, treasured in eight churches inscribed in the World Heritage List by UNESCO: Basilica of San Vitale, with an octagonal plan, the lovely Mausoleum of Gallia Placidia, the Neonian Baptistery, and the grand Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe, a little bit distant from the centre are only some of the many wonders that go with the visitors through centuries of history. And there’s even more: exclusive palaces, Dante’s tomb next to St. Francis basilica, festivals and stands during local street markets, without forgetting to taste the typical cooking specialities in some ancient tavern or sitting at the tables set out in the main square.

At last there’s Ferrara, city of the Renaissance with its refined beauty, which is embraced by the unique scenery of Po Delta and decorated by Estense palaces. Like a real masterpiece of art, Ferrara is still surrounded by the ancient walls, on which inside you can discover the enclosed Castle in the moat, the Cathedral and many historical theatres. Not to be missed the Palio of Piazza Ariostea, that takes place at the end of May and in which all the districts take part; and also the Buskers Festival during the end of August, the first and biggest festival of buskers from all over the world.
